The Lotus Sutra
Chapter 24 — The Bodhisattva Wonderful Sound (妙音菩萨品)
Part A — Traditional Summary (Text-Based)
In Chapter 24, the Buddha introduces Bodhisattva Wonderful Sound (妙音菩萨), who resides in a distant world called Pure Radiance Adorned with Kingly Powers (净光庄严国) under King Wisdom Buddha (智胜佛). Upon hearing that Śākyamuni Buddha is teaching the Lotus Sutra, Wonderful Sound wishes to visit the saha world to pay homage and hear the Dharma. With the Buddha’s permission, he travels across countless worlds, manifesting various forms according to the needs of beings. Upon arrival, Wonderful Sound praises Śākyamuni Buddha and the Lotus Sutra, and the two Buddhas affirm one another’s teachings. After teaching beings in many forms, Wonderful Sound eventually returns to his own world.
Part B — Lesson-Focused Summary (Insight-Based)
The essential lesson of this chapter is the limitless adaptability of enlightened activity. Bodhisattva Wonderful Sound demonstrates that awakening is not confined to one land, one body, or one mode of expression. True compassion expresses itself through appropriate manifestation (随类化身), responding precisely to the capacities and conditions of beings. This chapter reinforces the teaching that the Lotus Sutra is universally recognized and upheld across innumerable Buddha lands, and that bodhisattvas freely move between worlds to benefit beings. The name “Wonderful Sound” symbolizes Dharma expressed in forms that resonate, whether through speech, presence, or action.
